Active Voice
The active voice is more common in English and involves the subject of the sentence doing the action referenced by the main verb of the sentence.
So, "John wrote an essay." is in the active voice as the subject, "John" is doing the action mentioned by the verb, "to write", that is, "John wrote".
Contrast with Passive Voice.
